Designers’ Handbook of T-Shirt Promotions

Posted by Administrator On May - 15 - 2009

Designers' Handbook of T-Shirt PromotionsYears back, when I started on the screen printing business I bought a book from Print Magazine called: Designers’ Handbook of T-Shirt Promotions. A must have for any serious screen printer or graphic designer.  This book is more than a handbook–it’s an empowerment tool that  explains the hows and whys of creating great T-shirts, the kind that bring in business, support important causes, and express personal beliefs.

The author may have said it best when she said in her introduction:

“What’s more comfortable than a T-shirt? We put them on when we want to step outside our workaday selves, kick back, and relax-even if relaxing means running ten miles or scaling a wall of rock. T-shirts are like pajamas, only we’re not embarrassed to be seen wearing them in public. To the contrary, we wear them because we want to be noticed, because we want to be recognized immediately for who we are. Lacrosse player. Member of a church. Mickey Mouse fan. Country music lover. Participant in an AIDS walk. Graphic artist. T-shirts make statements like this, and many more.

While many T-shirt promotions involve serious issues, designers recognize that levity is an effective way of getting a message across, and the casual nature of the T-shirt medium lends itself to humorous treatment. When asked about the main problem in creating T-shirt promotions of all sorts, designer after designer told us, “Creating something fun, something that people will wear.” A tee that never gets taken out of a drawer is a waste of cotton. A tee that’s well-loved still gets worn, even after holes begin to appear.

More than other assignments, T-shirt promotions are labors of love. They provide designers with a chance to let loose, push the boundaries, have some fun. And when everything comes together and the result is a great T-shirt, the designer is rewarded with a uniquely public tribute-after all, no one parades around in an annual report”.
